Linux void warranty: no surprising news here
Here is story about HP's custom service told a customer that Linux voided warranty even though it was keyboard hardware issue and custom would reinstall original OS. The PR said
it is impossible to anticipate every single issue that a customer can face, so the terms and conditions of warranties can't list every possible scenario. Usually if a customer installs a different OS, it has a big impact on the PC and will void the warranty. However, since the OS couldn't have been responsible for keys sticking on a notebook keyboard, I think this is an exception to the rule.
No surprising news here. HP and many other computer hardware companies are focused on Windows platform only market. They don't have polices and trained people in place for supporting anything other than Windows. Whether customer support staffs have adequate skills is for another story.
Dell's going to offer Novell certified computer soon; thanks all for voting at Dell Ideastorm. I don't know how many people will actually going to buy Dell but I have feeling that not many people will do. They're That's probably because: Dell's Linux system will probably cost more; they will probably say it costs more to support Linux; even though, they probably doesn't support any Linux related issues (tell the customers to ask Novell?); the cost will probably will include Windows even thought you don't get Windows. End-rant-here.
For those who want to buy computer with Linux, check out company like system76 who not only sell computers with Linux but actually contribute back to the Linux community.
